Fresh Orchids For International Women’s Day

Peoples Flower Shops can’t wait to celebrate the most influential women in our lives this March 8, International Women’s Day. And while we don’t necessarily have a flower dedicated for gifting on IWD in the U.S., we’d like to nominate the orchid. Here’s why.

Over 100 countries celebrate IWD, each with their own themes and ways of celebrating, and some even have floral traditions. In Italy, they exchange yellow mimosa flowers, and in Russia, its common to give all women in the family flowers. Here in the U.S., we too give flowers on IWD, but there is no specific petal that speaks to the day itself. But we think it should be the orchid, which picks up two of IWD’s colors—purple and green. Our Orchid Drop In is a great example of a design that reflects the character and energy of our most vibrant women.

Purple has long been associated with the women’s rights movement, beginning with the suffragettes. It symbolizes loyalty and dignity, which is certainly a word we would use to describe the fair, regal orchid. In this glass cylinder, it becomes even more interesting, like a prism of color. Send it to the boldest women in your life to make sure they know how bold they are, too.
