National Sweetest Day is Set Aside for Kindness

sweetest day

Have you heard of Sweetest Day? The holiday, popular in the Midwest and Northeast, is actually approximately 100 years old and comes with one of the “sweetest” backstories we have ever heard. This year, the observance falls on October 21, and the team at Peoples Flowers thought we would acquaint you just a bit with this delicious day.sweetest dayThe first Sweetest Day was held in Cleveland circa 1922. It was the idea of one candy company employee named Herbert Kingston but was eventually executed by multiple candy company executives who had the authority to pull it off.  The candy companies handed out approximately 26,0000 boxes of candy at orphanages, nursing homes, and on the streets to indigent citizens. The event got huge media attention and the media were the ones to actually declare the day an annual event. New York State took notice and instituted Sweetest Week in 1927.

Quick Trivia: The day was never meant to be a romantic observance, but many assume it to be a less popular version of Valentine’s Day.

Interestingly enough, even though the day was the idea of a nobleman who wanted to help his community, and it was the media attention that caused the initiative to grow, eventually the candy companies came under fire, accused of commercializing and exploiting the plight of society’s less fortunate. Still, it is tough to keep a good idea down – the holiday exists to this day, although now any good, kind, or altruistic act is considered to be appropriate. That being said, we still love the concept of sweet treats to make people feel loved!

If you have a friend or a loved one who needs cheering up or is having a tough time, Sweetest Day is the perfect time to send them a gift of flowers. Why flowers? Studies have proven that flowers make us happier, and have a positive effect on our well-being. Sounds pretty sweet to us!

Chocolates or flowers or a handwritten note – the tradition of setting aside a day to encourage others is one we love. On Sweetest Day, and every day, Peoples Flowers is your premier choice in Albuquerque for all the beautiful gifts you’ll need.
