Fall Harvest flowers by the armful! Bushels of flowers always bring bright tiding and joy to the heart.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15th through October 15th.  This blog post provides information about this special celebration and offers some suggestions on ways to celebrate it.

What is National Hispanic Heritage Month?

National Hispanic Heritage Month is a way to recognize those of Hispanic and Latin American descent who have contributed to the growth and development of these cultures within the United States and provided a fine example of leadership, hard work, service, community and family. This is also a time to recognize many of the traditions and customs that have been adopted within the United States and add to the rich fiber of the community, including the Albuquerque, New Mexico area.

The month-long celebration began in 1968 and was started on September 15th because this is the anniversary of the independence of five countries while the month long celebration also includes the independence of other Latin American countries, including all in total, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico, Chile and Belize.

The theme this year is “Hispanics: Serving and Leading Our Nation with Pride and Honor.”

Time to Celebrate Grandparents Day This Sunday, September 8th

summerp2National Grandparents Day is here and it’s time to celebrate those family members who cherish your kids and most likely shower them with love and gifts as well as provide an excellent mentor for them to look up to. Your parents loved you but they also provide a special love for your children that should be celebrate this weekend and every day for that matter!

Our blog post this week is dedicated to Grandparents Day, including its history, purpose, and gift ideas. Whether near or far, grandparents can enjoy a special day thanks to you, the family, and us at Peoples Flower Shops.

How Grandparents Day Got Started and Why

National Grandparent’s Day was the idea of Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade. She decided in 1970 in her home state of West Virginia that grandparents needed a special day just like mothers and fathers already had. She campaigned and got the media to help spread the news signature2that it should become a national day, which came about in 1978. Now, it’s celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day.

McQuade believed that grandparents should be honored and celebrated for what they bring to families and the community, including guidance, experience, and knowledge. It’s a great day to stop and show your appreciation for everything they do and offer every day.

Ideas for Celebrating Grandparents Day

There are many ways to celebrate this Sunday with your grandparents whether you can be together or not.teacherp4

If you can get together, try these ideas:

  • Enjoy a meal together.
  • Take in a show or some type of entertainment.
  • Visit the old neighborhood.
  • Reminisce over old photographs.
  • Sit down and talk about family history and stories.
  • Go shopping.
  • Get pampered.
  • Host a family reunion.
  • Come over and take care of some home repairs or projects.

dadp2If you can’t get together, there are still ways to show them how much you love them:

Tropical Flowers Reflect the Summer Season

tropicalp4A true favorite among flower enthusiasts are tropical flowers, which offer a touch of the exotic. Not only are they truly unique looking flowers, but they are also a true standout when it comes to vibrant colors.

This blog post provides some information on some popular tropical flowers as well as previews our selection of tropical flowers in Albuquerque.

About Tropical Flowers

There is a long list of tropical flowers available from around the world. In this blog post, we will just introduce you to a couple of the varieties and share some interesting facts about these tropical flowers.tropicalp1

The first tropical flower that is a favorite in our Albuquerque florist shop is the bird of paradise. Here are some interesting facts on this tropical flower:

  • The name comes from the shape of the flower, which resembles a bird’s beak and plumage. Some say the flower also looks like a bird in flight.
  • These flowers are also known as crane flowers.
  • They are a native of South Africa.
  • Birds of Paradise bloom from September to May.
  • Typically, these flowers are bound together in a tropical flower bouquet because they can bruise the other, more delicate flowers in the flower arrangement.
  • They have a limited lifespan of no longer than a week.

tropicalp2The second tropical flower is the cymbidium orchid, another staff favorite! You may not know much about this orchid so we have provided some facts below:

  • This orchid does well in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, the Mediterranean or even California.
  • It is originally from Central Asia and Southeast Asia.
  • This is a fragrant orchid that can sometimes produce up to 30 blooms on one spike.
  • The orchid can last a couple of months.
  • It is often found in corsages but can be enjoyed as part of a tropical flower arrangement.
  • There are 44 varieties but literally thousands of hybrids to enjoy.

Keeping Flowers Fresher, Longer

To help you keep the flowers at their best, we also offer many tips on maintaining the freshness of our flowers and plants. Here are some great tips to keep in mind when you receive our flowers:

  • Keep the vase filled (or floral foam soaked) with water containing a flower food provided by your florist. Flower foods provide sugars, balance ph and limit bacterial growth. It is important to follow the mixing directions on the food packet. Most packets are to be mixed with either a pint or a quart of water. Do not dilute with more water than is specified on the packet.freshp4
  • Check your arrangement daily to make sure it has plenty of clear fresh water. If possible, re-cut stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife or scissors that will not crush the stems. Immediately place the stems into warm solution or deeply and firmly back into floral foam.
  • Keep flowers in a cool spot (65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or near appliances. Heat from appliances or hot and cold drafts cause flowers to dehydrate.

Sending the Ultimate Thank You

TY2We often spend a lot of time stressing over the gift giving season — who to get what and such. You aren’t alone either as others all over are too looking for that gift that is just a perfect fit yet is not always easily found.

Though when you do find it, you know it and after that nothing is really better than the surprised expression a thoughtful gift leaves on a loved one’s face.

So what happens when you unwrap one such present? It is bound to happen at least once every year. That one present that tugs on your heart just a little harder than the others — the one that may just bring a tear to your eyes is one that finds its place a little closer to your heart than the others. So what do you do with that one special gift?TY1

The Importance of a Thank You

Big or small, any gift you get deserves a thank you. Whether you say it once, send a card, or write out a sentimental letter explaining how much you love it, when you get a gift it is important to say thank you. Now though we aren’t talking about just any gift — we are talking about that one very special gift and with these we believe that saying thank you is only the beginning.

The Thank You Gift

While you won’t find yourself moved to do this for every gift, but like we said there might be just the one. With that one gift, you should not only be openly expressive of your thanks but should also do a little more for the person at a later time.

Below we have prepared a list of thoughtful thank you ideas that are sure to delight:

  • Flowers: After all, we are a florist and with our great holiday sales going on, there isn’t a better time to give thanks with flowers. Take any one of our handpicked and designed bouquets or arrangements and you will surely pleasantly surprise anyone with your thank you.
  • Wine: There is just something about the holidays and wine that goes together. If you want to especially thank someone this holiday season, why not try wine or maybe even invite them to a tasting? Be sure that they actually like wine first of course.
  • Craft: A craft is an inexpensive and personal way to say thanks to anyone. Not to mention that the options for this choice are literally endless.
  • Gift Basket: A gift basket is also a generous way to say thank you for that special gift.
  • Handwritten Note: In the digital age of emails, texts, and posts, getting a handwritten card says you are truly thankful because you took the time to compose something on paper.TY3

Giving thanks this holiday season is one of the best gifs you can give to loved ones!

The Eight Days of Hanukkah

Hanukkah1The story of Hanukkah goes that the Maccabees had returned to the temple from victory. When they arrived and were to light the Menorah, they found that there was only enough oil for a single day. And, with the preparation of the oil to take a whole week, they knew that they would soon be without the light.

However, the story goes onto say that the oil lasted for not one day but eight days, giving them enough time to produce more oil for the Menorah. This event became known as the miracle of the Menorah. From this miracle came the celebration of Hanukkah.

A Holiday, a Festival – It’s Hanukkah

Today and for many hundreds of years now, we have celebrated Hanukkah over the course of eight days in remembrance of the miracle at the Menorah. Because of these events, Hanukkah has also become known as the festival of lights during which candles are constantly burning to signify the eight day burning of the oil in the story.

However, there is much more to Hanukkah than just the story that it commemorates.

Hanukkah, as a holiday, festival, or both, is a time of togetherness for family and friends. It is a time of festivities amongst brothers and a time of celebration. Whether for the Maccabees’ victory, thankfulness, or the sake of tradition, Hanukkah is a time to celebrate.

Tradition and Modernism

There are many traditions in Hanukkah from the potlucks of some very yummy fried foods to the spinning of the Dreidel. There are also many modern twists on the holiday. Many families get each other gifts — one for each day of the holiday is a common practice.Hanukkah3

While some may believe this modern tradition is merely a spinoff of the Christmas holiday, there is actually a bit more to it. Each day, the oil burned in the miracle of the menorah was a gift to the Maccabees.

The gifts given on Hanukkah essentially represent each day and as a gift that the Menorah continued to burn on.

The Gift of Peoples Flowers

At Peoples Flowers, we offer a very unique alternative to the usual holiday gift – that is the gift of flowers or gift baskets. Hanukkah2

Reasonably Priced, High-Quality Flowers? Yes, it is Possible and True!

fresh1You’ve heard the saying that if it is probably seems too good to be true, then it probably is – well, that seems to apply to so much today when it comes to working with a product or service-based company.fresh2

With all the ads online that pop up telling us we have won the latest and greatest phone or video game system, it is kind of a wonder why anyone could ever fall for such a ruse.

And, when it seems like there is a real deal on a product or service, we jump at the chance because the economy has us in a grip where we have less money than ever before to spend.

So, instead of thinking it through many of us may have bought cheap items only to realize that you get what you pay for and that it was too good to be true.

Flowers are Expensive

One area that many of you may have cut back in is buying fresh flowers. And, when you see ones advertised for cheap, you wonder if they are the real deal.

As a flower shop, this has come to our attention because we have seen many second rate florists are advertising online specials for elegant bouquets with starting prices in the range of only $19.95. This is a prime example of if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is because, as it turns out, they are not elegant bouquets at all.fresh4

These are bare minimum bouquets that are small and certainly not fresh. Sometimes, it even turns out to be a scam. Some consumers have complained that these companies have even been known to deliver the flowers a few days late or not at all.

fresh3If the flowers arrive late, not only will your loved one be disappointed, but it also could be likely that the flowers are not going to be fresh.

Then, these flowers often show up in boxes that take away any of the special or elegant feel rather than coming hand-delivered as if they have just been picked and arranged.

There are many florists out there like this, but luckily there are also just as many quality, family-owned florists out there as well. At Peoples Flowers, you can always expect our bouquets and floral arrangements to be fresh and of the highest quality.

Don’t be fooled by scammers making promises they can’t keep because if it’s too good to be true, it probably is! Instead, choose a local florist who provides exceptional value as well as the freshest flowers possible!

Ward Off Thanksgiving Pounds with the Hobbler Gobbler Thanksgiving Run

Hobbler Gobbler logo

Run for fun at the Hobbler Gobbler.

What are you doing on Thanksgiving morning? How about stretching your legs a bit before you indulge in the traditional turkey feast? The Hobbler Gobbler Thanksgiving Day Run takes place on November 22. You can take it as fast or as slow as you like. Choose between the 10K run, 5K walk, or the kids’ K, a fun run geared for children.

The Hobbler Gobbler is a great way to get in some exercise before all those Turkey Day calories come calling. Even better, a portion of the proceeds go to RunFit, an after school running program for kids. If you register in advance, prices start as low as $20. The 10K starts at 9 in the morning and the Kids’ K starts at 10:15. That gives you plenty of time to enjoy the fall weather and still be home for the afternoon football game and feasting. Peoples Flowers is a big supporter of fitness for everyone and we encourage our customers to get out and get active.

Thanksgiving Decorations
Decorating for Thanksgiving is a great way to salute the colors of fall before you break out the strings of holiday lights or go searching for the perfect pine tree.

When choosing decorations, look to classic shades of warm oranges, deep reds, and rich browns. All you have to do is look outside at the falling leaves for inspiration. Pass on hanging up paper turkeys on your wall and instead think about grouping natural forms like squash and colorful dried leaves together to evoke the feel of harvest time.

Come into any Peoples Flowers location around Albuquerque for a custom Thanksgiving bouquet designed to match your decor. We also make it easy to send flowers as a hostess gift or as way to contribute to a family Thanksgiving gathering if you can’t be attendance yourself. As the holiday approaches, Peoples Flowers wants to say a big “Thank you” to our customers. Happy Thanksgiving!
