And the science supports us: a 2008 study by the American Society of Horticultural Science found that hospitalized patients who have flowers or a potted plant in their rooms use less pain medication and have on average lower blood pressure than their flower-less counterparts. Fresh blooms have long been used medicinally, while flower essence has also been reported to have therapeutic value (consider the popularity of lavender as a de-stresser). Flowers and plants oxygenate the air as well, an important feature when you take into account that those who are feeling under the weather are likely bedridden or at least home bound. It’s no surprise that flowers are our go-to when it comes to get well gifts.
