Election Day is Almost Here: Get out and vote!

Vote buttonTuesday, November 6 is a big day for our country. Together, we will decided who gets to be president for the next four years. There are countless local races at stake as well as community bonds and issues. Peoples Flower Shops encourages its customers and the community to get out and vote. Let your voice be heard. Every vote really does make a difference.

Vote Early
You still have a little bit of time to vote early. Early voting in Albuquerque runs through November 3. That means one more Saturday for early voting if you’re too busy during the week. This is smart if you know you’ll have a hard time getting away from work on Tuesday to vote or if you’re concerned about long lines. If you’re voting by absentee ballot, then be sure turn it in before 7 pm on November 6.

Voting on Election Day in Albuquerque
In some past elections, Albuquerque voters have been assigned a particular location to vote in. This year, it’s wide open. You can visit any voting center to cast your vote. Bernalillo County has a total of 69 voting centers, so one is bound to be near you. Take a moment to check out the voting center locations and find a convenient spot near your home or work. You have a 12-hour stretch to get your vote in. Polls are open from 7 am. to 7 pm. Visit the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office voting page for the latest information.

There are several issues on the ballot for the Albuquerque area. Get informed through the League of Women Voters of Central New Mexico information guide. The League is nonpartisan, so it’s a good resource no matter what your political affiliation is. Pick up a hard copy or read it online and you will be well prepared to make an informed decision on Election Day.

Decorate for an Election Night Watch Party
It’s election night. You’ve already voted. The polls are closed. It’s time to watch the results roll in throughout the evening. Are you hosting an election watch party? Spruce up your home for the occasion. For a classic look, hang red, white, and blue crepe paper streamers or bunting from the ceiling. It’s easy to find plates in patriotic colors. This can also be a great opportunity to use up the leftover supplies from your Fourth of July party. Creative snacks can be one of the best parts of an election night party. If you like baking, then make cookies or cupcakes and decorate them with red, white, and blue icing.

Stop by Peoples Flowers for a selection of bouquets in all-American colors. Our professional designers can create a show-stopping centerpiece or smaller arrangements to bring a pop of patriotic color to your decor. Election Day is a momentous day for our country. Be proud of our heritage that allows us to have a say in how our government is run. Get out and vote!

Find Halloween Family Fun Around Albuquerque

Halloween decor

Halloween is near! (Credit: Sarah Ackerman)

Halloween is almost here. The little ghosts and goblins are sorting out their costumes and dreaming of a day full of sweet treats and spooky adventures. Peoples Flowers has your ticket to find top Halloween family activities in Albuquerque.

Zoo Boo: Albuquerque’s Top Trick-or-Treating Alternative
Halloween is on a Wednesday this year. If you don’t want to take your little ones out on a school night, you can still celebrate the holiday with a visit to Zoo Boo on Saturday, October 27 at the Biopark Zoo. Explore haunted habitats, join in the costume parade, and take part in costume contests for visitors 12 and under. Up to four children get in free with a paid adult admission of $10.

Haunted Maze
Looking for a real Halloween adventure for the whole family? The Maize Maze at the Rio Grande Community Farm is open until November 1. As we get closer to Halloween, this amazing maze will transform into the Haunted Maze! You can visit on October 26th through the 28th and on the 30th. Watch out around the corners, you never know what you might find. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for kids 3 to 12, and free for 2 and under.

Trick or Treat So Others May Eat
The weather in Albuquerque at the end of October can be a little tricky sometimes. If it’s too cold or wet to go out, consider an indoor event. Trick or Treat So Others May Eat takes place from 6 to 8 on Halloween night at Coronado Center. Even better, it’s for a good cause. There are pumpkin decorating activities, but store-to-store trick-or-treating is the big attraction. Bring canned food to exchange for a starter bag. The food goes to Joy Junction Homeless Shelter and you get a safe, warm place to take your kids for Halloween.

Halloween Safety Tips
Peoples Flowers loves Halloween just as much as our customers. We want you to have a fun and safe night. Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Wear safe costumes. If you plan to walk a trick-or-treating route, make sure your kids are in costumes that don’t restrict their movement or vision. Stay away from candles and wear fire-resistant costumes.

2. Lights on! When you have young ones out trick-or-treating at night, always keep a flashlight handy. You’ll want to carry one for sure, but your little ones can, too. Add some reflective strips to costumes so they light up and give both motorists and you visual feedback as to where the kids are.

3. Travel in groups. Safety in numbers. This can be extra fun if you get other parents and kids together.

4. Check the treats before you eat. Treat tampering is extremely rare, but it doesn’t hurt to look over the candy your kids have gathered for any obvious signs of problems.

Celebrate Mother-in-Law Day with Gifts and Flowers from Peoples

Dazzler bouquet

A bouquet is a classic gift.

We’ve all heard mother-in-law jokes, but there’s at least one very big reason to be grateful for your mother-in-law. If it weren’t for her, you wouldn’t have your lovely spouse in your life. That alone is a great reason to celebrate Mother-In-Law Day on Sunday, October 28.

Guess what? The majority of mothers-in-law actually get along just fine with their daughters-in-law. A survey by ThirdAge last year checked in with 1,868 mothers-in-law and 2,000 daughters-in-law about what they think of each other. The survey found more than 60 percent of of mothers-in-laws consider their son’s wife to be a friend, the right woman for their son, or like a daughter.

We already have a Mother’s Day, so why do we have a day for mothers-in-law, too? Mothers-in-law often get overlooked by their daughters-in-law and sons-in-law on Mother’s Day. Mothers-in-law are often there to watch the kids when you need them. They can be a great source of wisdom. They may be the one person in the world who knows your spouse as well or better than you do. So let’s raise a cheer for mothers-in-law and celebrate them on October 28.

Show your Appreciation
If you haven’t celebrated Mother-In-Law day before, now is a great time to start with making it an annual family tradition. Since Mother-In-Law day isn’t as widely known as Mother’s Day, you’ll likely be giving your mother-in-law an unexpected and delightful surprise when you give her flowers or a gift. If you already have a good relationship, it will make your bond even better. If you’ve maybe had a few rocky places along the way, it will help smooth things over for the future.

Flowers are a classic gift. It’s hard to go wrong with any bouquet, but it’s especially sweet if you take the time to select flowers that are meaningful for her. If you’re not sure where to start, try to sneak in a word with your father-in-law. Your spouse may also remember if she has a favorite flower. Use this as the centerpiece for a beautiful bouquet.

Kiwi spa basket

Give your Mother-in-Law a Spa Day
After all those times your mother-in-law saved the day by watching the grand-kids, why not express your appreciation with a spa basket? These specialty gift baskets from Peoples come in several different flavors. Choose from Kiwi Melon, Orchid Sensation, or Fresh Fruit. Even better, our Fresh Fruit and Spa basket is organic! It comes with apples, oranges, pears, and organic green tea. Rosemary mint hand wash, soap, and moisturizing cream round out the spa side.

Order for Anywhere

Discover the Beautiful Blooms of September

Englsh Breakfast bouquet

Enjoy the colors of early fall.

We tend to think of spring as prime time for flowers, but fall has its own special mix of elegant and exuberant blooms. September, in particular, is a great month for seasonal specials. You might be surprised at the number and variety of flowers that are showing off in late summer and early fall. Follow along as we tiptoe through some of our favorite September seasonal blooms.

Romantic Roses
Many roses go through two blooming cycles during the year, a major bloom in spring and then a smaller, but just as lovely, bloom in the fall. This means many roses are in season for September. This is great news for anyone planning a fall wedding with a traditional style theme. Romance is year-round! You can also feel good about picking out a selection of seasonal roses to share your love with that special someone.

As September moves along, think about branching out into fall rose colors such as yellow and orange to really celebrate the arrival of autumn. Peoples’ English Breakfast bouquet features a combination of fanciful fall blooms, including yellow roses and hydrangeas.

Dashing Dahlias
Dahlias are a quintessential flower of late summer and early fall. These flowers are very architectural in their shape and come in many different colors, ranging from peppy pink to antique-looking bronze. Dahlias are small wonders of geometry, with each bloom radiating outward in a show of beauty.

A collection of dahlias can make for a truly stunning bridal bouquet for a September wedding. Their shape, strength, and beauty will compliment any dress or decor. Peoples’ experienced wedding consultants can help you track down the perfect dahlias to meld with your wedding theme and colors.

Stargazer bouquet

Hydrangeas make for a gorgeous backdrop for these lilies.

Happy Hydrangeas
Showy hydrangeas are prized for their variety of colors and pom-pom blooms. These fun flowers typically begin blooming in mid-summer and continue into early fall. Hydrangeas can be combined with other flowers to create a unique look that really stands out. Peoples’ Stargazers and Hydrangeas bouquet is a great example of this. The strong lines of the lilies show up in stunning contrast against a canvas of hydrangeas.

Awesome Asters
Asters are a favorite fall plant. These hardy flowers bloom well into autumn. They attract butterflies when planted in a garden, and will be sure to attract your eye when included in a bouquet. Asters are prolific bloomers with small flowers that lend a sense of softness to an arrangement. They are often found in shades of pink, purple and white. Add them as accents to a larger bouquet or enjoy their delicate daisy-like flowers grouped together in a dainty collection.

Peoples’ Tips for Cut Flowers that Last Longer

roses in vasse

Keep your flowers fresh with clean water.

When you receive flowers, you want this gorgeous gift to last for as long as possible. There are a few simple steps you can take to keep your flowers looking vibrant and fresh for days to come.

It Starts with the Source
Fresh flowers will last longer once they are in your home and office than flowers that have been sitting around for many days. That’s why Peoples Flowers has a commitment to providing only the freshest and healthiest blooms so you can enjoy your bouquet for a long time.

Follow the Care Instructions
Your flowers are usually delivered with a set of simple care instructions. If a packet of flower food is included, open it and pour it into the vase. Mix well with water before placing your flowers inside. The packet may have specific instructions for the ratio of water to the amount of flower food. You will want to take care not to over-dilute it.

Just what is flower food? It’s usually a combination of ingredients designed to extend the life your flowers and prevent bacteria from growing in the vase. It can provide nutrients that keep your bouquet healthy over time and acidifiers that keep the water clean. Think of it as fuel for your cut flowers!

Place the Vase
The location of an arrangement can have a big impact on its longevity. If you place it near a heater in the winter, it will be prone to drying out quickly. Find a temperate spot like the middle of the dining room table or atop a mantle when you’re not building fires. You might also want to avoid placing the vase in direct sunlight or in the path of a draft. When you take care in placing your flowers, you can enjoy their beauty without dehydrating them.

sunflowers in vase

For a long-lasting bouquet, get the freshest flowers possible.

Trim to Extend Time
Trimming an inch or two off the stems of the flowers can help the blooms pull in more water and last longer. This is especially true if the ends have gotten dried out. Use sharp scissors or a sharp knife to achieve a nice, clean cut without crushing the stems. Keep an eye out for broken or drooping stems and remove them so they don’t visually detract from the rest of the bouquet.

Change the Water
Start with a clean vase if you’re providing your own. Wash it out well with dish soap and rinse thoroughly before placing the flowers in. If the water gets murky or the water level is low, then it’s time to refresh the water supply in your vase. If you have a clear vase, this is easy to see. If you have an opaque vase, you’ll want to remind yourself to check it. A daily refresher can be a big boost to extending the life of your bouquet.

Talk to Peoples
Different flowers have different cut life spans. If you’re looking for a recommendation, then call Peoples or drop by any of our locations for expert advice on choosing long-lasting blooms. We’ll be happy to customize an arrangement to meet your tastes and your time-frame.

You May Never Dial 1-800 for Flowers Again

Dazzler bouquet

Peoples delivers fresh, stunning arrangements.

Our airwaves and online visits are filled with ads for flowers. Photos of lush bouquets emanating from large vases implore you to call 1-800 to order now for delivery. Ordering from a huge 1-800 company is a lot like fast food. The commercials look appetizing, but the actual product can be very different.

The 1-800 Way
What happens when you call a big 1-800 flower company? You are connected to an order taker who is part of a massive call center somewhere far away. That person’s only interest is selling you the biggest bouquet possible, price-wise. He isn’t thinking about what flowers are in season or what would be a good fit for your gift recipient. It’s about taking orders and moving on. Some companies even ship flowers in boxes with the vase packed separately so that recipient has to put her own bouquet together. That takes some of the fun out of receiving flowers.

Peoples Flowers’ Way
It doesn’t have to be like this. There is a better way. Call 505-884-1600 to talk to Peoples Flower Shops. We’re a local, family-owned business and we know flowers. Our floral professionals can suggest beautiful seasonal arrangements, track down hard-to-find flowers, and customize bouquets to meet your needs and budget. Plus, local business means local delivery. Your flowers will arrive fresh, unbruised and beautiful.

Hidden Costs for Low Prices
Big 1-800 companies often pull in customers with extremely low advertised prices. That can be tempting, but look out for extra costs hidden in high service and delivery fees. Big delivery prices means less of your money goes to the actual flowers. Your dollar goes much further with Peoples. Our prices are competitive and we don’t surprise our customers with unreasonable extra fees.

Customer Service Makes the Difference
This is a story about customer service. We don’t have a warehouse-sized call center, but we do have a dedicated staff who is knowledgeable, friendly, and dedicated to delivering gorgeous fresh flowers. With a large 1-800 company, what you think you’ve ordered is not always what is delivered. With Peoples, our design professionals and delivery team will make sure the bouquet is gorgeous and arrives in lovely shape, ready to wow the recipient.

With Peoples, you have a point of contact to walk with you through the ordering process, answer any questions, fill you in on flower availability, and provide any follow-up you might need. Some big flower companies will substitute flowers, which can be an unwelcome surprise. With Peoples, we know what’s available and how to keep the blooms looking their best from our stores to your door. So go ahead and pick up the phone with confidence. Peoples Flower Shops is just a ring away at 505-884-1600.
