Before Christmas was even a holiday, ancient people celebrated the Winter Solstice. As they were enduring harsh winters, the Solstice signaled the turn towards the return of warm weather. These cultures often believed that all elements of nature contained spirits – and the evergreen, being so resilient to the adverse conditions, represented a spirit of hope and protection. It was thought that twisted evergreen branches could absorb the sunlight and bring about longer days.
As history marched on, the Romans adopted the evergreen wreath as a symbol of victory. Once Christianity began to flourish in the Roman empire, the new followers of the faith saw evergreen wreaths as emblematic of Christ’s victory over death. The circular shape was also representative of eternal life, as the wreath – like a circle – had no discernible beginning or end. When Christmas was established so close to the pagan observance of the Winter Solstice, the use of the wreath for the celebrations was established. In modern times, a wreath is a window or on a front door simply represented the spirit of the holiday – goodwill, peace, and joy.
