The Mother Of All Days

In honor of Mother’s Day, Peoples Flower Shops asked one of our floral designers—who also happens to be a mom—to share her experience and also her expertise when it comes to selecting the perfect flowers for mom this May 13.

Name: Heather Henderson-Rivera

Child’s first name and age: Kyleigh Ann Rivera, 22.

How did you get into floral work?

My mother, Marietta, moved out to Albuquerque, New Mexico with my father in the mid 1960s. She became employed as a day surgery nurse at a local hospital. As an outlet and a way to artistically express herself when not working as as nurse, she volunteered at a flower shop. I always thought as a kid (and into adulthood) how neat it was of her to go help out at the flower shop and design flowers. To this day, my mother is an incredible artist. Her forte is watercolor painting. While attending college and studying to become a social worker, I followed in my mother’s footsteps and volunteered at several flowers shops. Through volunteering, I found my passion! It gets in your blood.

Fall Florals and Creative Accents

fall florals

Autumn gives us many inspirations for fall florals. The designers at Peoples Flower Shops are experts at incorporating these organic details and wild accents into our bouquets and arrangements, resulting in some of the most beautiful floral designs in Albuquerque. If your occasion calls for something special, don’t settle for just any flowers – choose fall floral designs that go beyond ordinary.

Nature is brimming with elements perfect for the season’s best creations. Some of the most popular are wheat, millet. and cattails, which immediately evoke all the warmth and memories of this time of year. If you are looking for the perfect representation of fall, these and many other accents will do the job. You may wish to consider gourds and pumpkins, fruits (such as apples and pears) or even artichokes, kale and cabbage leaves.fall florals

To add depth and interest to your design, we can employ curly willow, varied grasses, twigs or natural branches; as well as lotus pods, seeded eucalyptus, or eryngium – otherwise known as thistle. Rocks and mosses added to the vase or container also add to the wild expression of the piece.

Wild accents that are often used in unique ways are succulents. Although you may think they would partner naturally with wildflowers or tropicals  – and they do – they also create a gorgeous presentation when paired with orchids and roses.

Trusting the expertise and artistic flair of a professional floral designer is the difference between a nice arrangement and a spectacular one. For birthdays, dinner parties or simply “just because” – give Peoples Flower Shops a call. We are proud to provide the most beautiful arrangements in Albuquerque.

Traditions, Customs and Flowers of Rosh Hashanah

rosh hashanah

Rosh Hashanah, literally “the head of the year”, is the Jewish New Year. It is a time of both solemn reflection and celebrations with family. There are many customs that are associated with the day, both spiritual and festive, and we thought we would take this opportunity to share some with you. At Peoples Flowers, we’d like to wish all of our Jewish friends and neighbors L’Shanah Tovah!

rosh hashanah

The Meaning of the Holiday: Rosh Hashanah is a time for repentant prayer and asking for forgiveness for the sins of the last 12 months. It also is a time for looking forward with hope to the New Year.

Religious Observances: The shofar is blown in the synagogue calling the faithful to repentance. The day is spent reciting prayers from the mahzor, a special prayer book for the High Holy Days. Some denominations celebrate for one day, some for two. This year, Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on October 2.

The Meal: As is the case in many Jewish festivals, a traditional meal is an important part of the observance. The meals often contain foods that hold great significance, notably challah bread (the circle of life, and God’s provision), apples dipped in honey (sweet hope for the new year), and pomegranates (representing the law and the Torah).

Rosh Hashanah

Although there are no customary flowers or Rosh Hashanah, white blooms are meaningful as they signify purity, innocence, a clean slate and new beginnings- all fitting attributes for a new year.  Blue flowers such as delphinium, orchids, iris, or hydrangea are often added as blue points to the divine.  Some people celebrating also choose a more harvest theme for their centerpieces, with wheat stalks, berries, and fruit accents. These florals are complimentary to the fruit and bread in the meal.

The floral designers at Peoples Flowers look forward to helping you to decorate your holiday table for this very special festival. We are proud to serve the greater Albuquerque Metro and Rio Rancho area.

Whether you choose to accessorize your wardrobe, give a symbolic gift or show pride in your school is up to you. Flowers as an Accessory to Your Wardrobe

Most people choose to use flowers as a stylish accent to their homecoming finery. Peoples Flowers offers a wide variety of flower colors that will make your outfit pop. If you don’t see the precise shade you’re looking for, don’t hesitate to bring us a sample of your wardrobe colors. We’re happy to help you find a flower to match!

If you aren’t sure what colors you or your date will be wearing, you can always choose flowers in a color that will go with anything. Delicate white orchids or sweet white rosebuds will complement any outfit you choose.

Homecoming Flowers with Meaning

Symbolic flowers are a great way to express your thoughts and feelings to your homecoming date. Carnations, for instance, have several meanings depending on the colors you choose. White carnations represent good luck and purity, while reds show your admiration and affection.

Roses are another meaningful selection. Deep reds say “I love you” like no other flower. Pink roses are the picture of elegance, grace and beauty, while yellows and oranges convey joy, friendship and passion.

Show Your School Spirit

For anyone who wants to display a little bit of school spirit, flowers in your school colors are a fantastic choice. We can create wristlets and boutonnieres in any number of colors and styles. If your school uses colors that are hard to find in the flower world, such as green, black, silver or gold, there are several stylish ways to work those colors into any homecoming flower arrangement.

With lush foliage, it’s easy to add green into any corsage, armband or boutonniere. For blacks, choose tasteful ribbons and bows or unique black faux foliage. You can use ribbon or metallic accents to add splashes of silver and gold to your flowers.

Homecoming is one of the most special times of the year, and you can make it even more memorable with a thoughtful gift of flowers for your date. Let Peoples Flowers create dazzling corsages and boutonnieres to accent your attire or express exactly how you feel on this special day!

Flowers For Homecoming, The Full Guide!

Homecoming season is in the air! It is time for exciting football games, the chance to dance with that special someone, and to feel a bit of school pride. Those preparing to attend their local homecoming will have some preparations to complete! Once they determine who their date will be, there is shopping for formal wear, determining transportation, ironing out dinner, and of course, buying flowers.

Flowers are a traditional part of homecoming as a means of dressing up and celebrating school pride. Traditionally, girls are given wrist corsages, which are coordinated to their dress, and boys have boutonnieres that match their date’s gown and flowers. These flowers can also serve as excellent mementos from the big day when people dry them. Finding the perfect flower, however, can sometimes be a bit of a challenge.

Color

It is important to coordinate the colors of the flowers so that the dates themselves and their adornments all look as though they belong together. This typically can be accomplished by having the colors matched with the color of the girl’s dress. Since homecomings tend to be in warm weather, many flower options will be light in color, such as whites and pinks. White can be an especially helpful color because even if the color of the girl’s dress is unknown, it will look fantastic for both girls and boys.

Most corsages will also come adorned with ribbons. Some people enjoy matching this ribbon to a school color that reflects their school pride, but that is not required. The prevalence of such an embellishment is typically determined by the local the school’s traditions.

Flower type

Many couples will buy flowers for each other based on personal preferences or the local school traditions. Many schools have histories of giving mums or other particular flowers for homecoming. If the flower preference of the recipient is a complete mystery, there are some flowers that tend to be very popular.

Roses

Roses come in a wide range of colors and the classic beauty of the blossom will please just about anyone. Those who have no idea about what flower to get could consider getting a white rose for an elegant look that will always look spectacular.

Orchids

Orchids are another flower that has grown immensely in popularity in recent years. The soft elegance of this flower mean that it is easily matched to the themes and colors for the evening. There are also a number of different colors for orchids, so this sleek, classy look can be paired with many different dresses.

Carnations

Carnations are a classic choice for a corsage. Their soft pinks and whites look elegant and formal, making them a great pick.

Homecoming is a time to celebrate and enjoy connecting with others who have attended the school. Have fun and look prepared with these beautiful flower selections.

Designers’ Choice Garden Style Flower Arrangements

p1Flowers are beautiful by themselves but when put together into a flower arrangement, their beauty is enhanced and something even more stunning can be created. While some types of floral designs are made to look stylized, there are others that attempt to look as natural as possible. One of these floral design styles is known as the garden style.

This blog looks at that style and provides some information on what is involved in creating that particular floral design style. We’ve also included some of our own garden style arrangements, including our new Designers’ Choice products. p2

Understanding the Garden Style Floral Design Concept

The garden style is defined by the idea that a flower arrangement should look as though it was part of a garden or nature rather than formally arranged. Typically, the flowers are spread out and displayed in a long container although other types of containers can be used, including terra cotta pots, baskets, and vases. There are usually alternating heights for the flowers of low and high as well as many different hues.

This flower arrangement style is also referred to as the English garden design. There is a loose structure to the floral design with no particular amount required to create the look.

All types of flower varieties can be used, including tulips, sweet peas, stock, daisies, lilies, geraniums, marigolds, aster, poppies, roses, lavender and carnations just to name a few. The only defining factor is that the flowers bloom within the same season.

This particular floral design also tends to feature more foliage than other floral design styles, including leafy foliage, evergreens, and woody-stemmed varieties.p3
