Giving To Our Community Through Flowers

During the holidays, we get swept up in the spirit of giving. But while hitting the stores and returning home with a trunk load of presents to dazzle our family with is fun, we here at Peoples Flower Shops are focused on that other kind of giving – the charitable kind.

We do this in a few ways. We offer a floral donation to the Folds of Honor Gala, which benefits the spouses and children of fallen or injured U.S. service-members through educational scholarships. We make another donation to the American Heart Association’s Heart Ball, held each year here in Albuquerque. This past March, we sourced about 22,000 daffodils for Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation’s Daffodil Days, a massive fundraiser to benefit Hospice.

Puppy Day Emphasizes Need for Adoption

puppy day

National Puppy Day was established by animal advocates who saw the need for awareness and education regarding the plight of puppies in the United States. It is estimated that only 1 in 10 puppies born each year will spend their full life in a loving family home. Instead, along with their adult counterparts, over 4 million canines will enter into the shelter system this year – a number that sadly, the system cannot accommodate. Organizers of National Puppy Day strive to inform pet owners of the problem, encourage puppy adoption, and help to significantly decrease the number of unwanted puppies born each year.

Did You Know? If you are an animal lover and would like to help, it is as easy as ordering your bouquets and arrangements from Peoples Flowers. Through our Helping Hands Program, you can choose to make a donation to Animal Humane New Mexico with every online purchase.  Continue reading

Come Participate in Daffodil Days and Raise Money for a Great Cause

daffy1It’s that time of year again — spring and the season of giving! For many years now, we have participated in Daffodil Days in the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho area. It’s a great cause and it fits our ongoing goal to participate in events that help our community.

Being a participant in the event as well as serving as a sponsor shows our community that we want to take care of everyone in it and help strengthen the bonds that make Albuquerque such a great place to live and work!

All about Daffodil Days

Daffodil Days is a large fundraiser that helps out the Presbyterian Hospital Hospice. It began in 1999 when Hospice volunteer Joan Walsh came up with the idea of a spring fundraising event that included selling daffodils as a way to get money for those that were struggling with hospice care for their loved ones.

Blooming Success

From that small start, Daffodil Days has grown each year to what it is today. It now takes volunteers a few days to wrap and arrange all the daffodils for sale, which are now sold in bunches, a vase, or as part of a larger flower arrangement.

daffy3The fundraiser is for the hospital’s home healthcare unit, which delivers skilled home care and hospice services throughout New Mexico. Over 500 volunteers sell thousands of daffodils over the course of the event.

The money raised from the sale of these daffodils will provide financial assistance to families that use the hospice services, including a way to cover medications, food, utilities and funeral expenses.

Details on This Year’s Event

This year’s Daffodil Days is scheduled for March 22 and March 23. There will be 160,000 daffodils that will arrive on Sunday, March 17th. Already, the event has 1,700 pre-ordered arrangements.

The rest of the daffodils will be sold at 26 sales sites throughout the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho areas. There are a number of sales locations to purchase the daffodils.
