What’s That Flower?

Instead of uploading a photo, this app asks several basic questions about any plant or flower you want to be identified. Choose the color, habitat, and number of petals and you’ll instantly be presented with matching results of what it could be. Also, each result has detailed data on the flower with a gallery of additional images and taxonomy too. This app is free or for an ad-free premium version, there is a charge.

PictureThis

Take a picture of a flower or plant and get a result immediately with the PictureThis app. Referring to itself a “botanist in your pocket,” this app utilizes artificial intelligence technology to recognize user’s submissions and alleges a 99% accuracy rate. So far, over 27 million plants have been identified. Additionally, PictureThis offers growing and care tips, disease identification, and pest control information along with a social network for flower lovers. This is a subscription-based app with a free 7-day trial.

FlowerChecker

A popular plant and flower identification app, FlowerChecker doesn’t use computer technology to identify plants and flowers, instead it employs real expert botanists who analyze each photo. Just submit a picture of a plant or flower you want identified ( they also can identify unknown moss, fungi, and lichen), and within minutes you could have a result. Most IDs are delivered in less than an hour, but some may take several hours. Due to humans being involved, they claim a higher accuracy rate and charge .99 cents for each identification. If an ID cannot be made, you will not be charged.

PlantNet

PlantNet is a free app that was developed by scientists. It uses visual recognition software to study a photo and present potential matches. PlantNet has over 4,100 species of flora in their database which “learns” every time a user adds a photo to it. Besides plants, this app also identifies trees, conifers, grasses, ferns, vines, and cacti.
